This fall I have attended three Beth Moore Bible studies at our church. She has been talking about Imago Dei, how we have been created in God's image. Last night she took us to a passage in James that really made me think.
7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by man kind. 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. 10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not be so. James 3:7-10
How often do we begin our day in prayer or in God's word. Our hearts are so focused on Him and our lips are praising Him. But its so easy to later in the day switch to gossiping or complaining. We are ALL made in God's image, His likeness. Since each person is made in God's image, we owe one another respect, not judgement, harsh words or talking behind someone's back.
Looking at this verse in the context of all people being made in God's image, really brings to light for me the way that I need to treat others.
3Because Your steadfast love is better than life,
my lips will praise You.
4So I will bless You as long as I live;
in Your name I will lift up my hands.
Psalm 63:3-4
